A graduateI, Hiroko Nagatomo, began showing interest in drawing at the age of three and declared I would become a painter when I was ten. My mother, a junior high school art teacher, and my father, a calligrapher and Japanese language teacher, nurtured that dream with warmth and care. They created a home environment where I was always free to paint, explore, and play with ink and brushes.

I pursued a path in the arts, studying painting at university, where I explored the joy of traveling through color on canvas using oil paints. At the age of 28, I met my calligraphy mentor, Eishu Nagai (Dokuritsu-sho), which marked a turning point. Through this encounter, I expanded my expression into bokushō—abstract ink expression—capturing the strength and subtlety of the line. Since then, my work has evolved to include not only two-dimensional works but also three-dimensional and performance-based expressions, always seeking new possibilities in art.

Growing up, I frequently visited a school for children with disabilities, where my mother worked. These early experiences formed the foundation of my creative practice today. Throughout my career, I have continued to collaborate with individuals with disabilities through art, sharing space and expression.

In 1994, I founded Atelier Blanc, a painting and creative arts studio in Okurayama, Yokohama. In 1999, I relocated to Miyazaki and established Neue Art Space, a community-based art hub that hosts workshops, exhibitions, and monthly talk events with artists and professionals from various fields. Since March 2010, I have been based in Seattle, Washington, continuing my creative journey.

長友 裕子（ながともひろこ）

3 歳から絵を描くことに興味を持ち始め、10 歳の時に画家になると宣言した。中学校の美術教師であった母親と、同じく中学校の国語教師・書道家であった父親共々、画家になるという願いを温かく育み、いつでも自由にアート制作や墨を擦り書いて遊ぶ環境を与えてくれていた。

美術の分野に進み、美術大学では色によってキャンバスの中を旅する楽しさを油絵で追求した。28 歳で書の師、長井恵州( 独立書) と出会い、線の持つしなやかさと強さを墨で表現する墨象（墨による抽象表現）へと表現の幅を拡げ、さらに、平面だけではなく立体表現・身体表現へとより自由にアートの可能性を見出し、制作している。

母親の勤務先であった障がいのある子ども達の学校へ幼い頃から行き親しんだことが、現在の制作の基底であり、アートを通して長い間障がいのある方々と活動を共にしてきた。

絵画造形教室 Atelier Blanc (アトリエ ブランク）を1994年に横浜市大倉山で開始、1999年12月に宮崎に拠点を移し Neue Art Space (ノイエ・アート・スペース）を宮崎で設立。絵画造形教室の機能に加え、様々なワークショップや、毎月アーティストや各界のスペシャリストを招きトークショーを開催するなど、地元のコミュニティに開いた場を作った。2010年3月にシアトルに移り、活動を続けている。
